  • OCOTILLO INFO

The Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) is a plant native to the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert in the Southwestern United States. Its unusual form and appearance make it an essential part of southwestern landscapes.

A semi-succulent desert plant, Ocotillo is more closely related to tea and blueberries than to cacti.

For much of the year, the plant appears to be an arrangement of large spiny dead sticks, although closer examination reveals that the stems are partly green. With rainfall, the plant quickly becomes lush with small, ovate leaves, which may remain for weeks or even months.

  • FAQ

How much does an ocotillo cost?

Rooted 5-gallon ocotillos start at $120. Bare-root 8–9 ft ocotillos are $249.99 and 10–12 ft ocotillos are $349.99. Specimen ocotillos are also available, and 6 ft ocotillos can be shipped nationwide.

Do you deliver and plant in my area?

Yes. Our own crew delivers and professionally plants throughout Tempe, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and the rest of the Phoenix metro, statewide across Arizona, and to California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. Delivery and planting are priced separately at our posted rates (see Delivery, Planting & Free Pickup). Your cart shows them before checkout, and our staff will text or email you to schedule. You can also pick up free at our nursery at 821 S Farmer Ave, Tempe.

Is it legal to buy an ocotillo?

Yes, from a licensed seller. Ocotillos are protected Arizona native plants and require an Arizona Department of Agriculture permit and tag to be moved. Ours are legally harvested, properly oriented and sold with the required permits and tags.

How do I care for a newly planted ocotillo?

One week after planting, give a slow, deep watering with the hose or drip line at least 24" from the base. Repeat every 7–10 days in summer and about once a month in winter until established, letting the roots dry out between waterings. For the first few months, spray the canes from all sides every 2–3 days to keep them plump while new roots grow. Losing leaves after planting is normal – most ocotillos leaf out within 6–9 months.

What if my ocotillo doesn't make it?

If an ocotillo we delivered and planted doesn't establish within the first year, you can order a discounted replacement ocotillo for $99.99 plus delivery and planting, for one year from your original order date.
