If you're dreaming of adding an iconic desert look to your Arizona landscape, look no further than the mighty saguaro cactus. At Ocotillo Joe, we specialize in these majestic desert natives and want to give you the full picture: pricing, buying details, fun facts, and care tips so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

💲 How Much Do They Cost?
Here’s the quick breakdown:
Standard landscape-size saguaros are typically $100 per foot. For example, a 2-foot cactus would be around $200.
Larger, more unique specimens with arms or special shapes are priced higher.
Delivery and planting are available through our Saguaro Express service, making it easy to get your cactus installed by the pros.
On occasion, you may be able to find discounts on cactus with slight blemishes.
So if you’re budgeting for one, remember... size DOES matter! The taller and more mature the saguaro, the higher the cost.

🌵 Why Saguaros Are So Cool
Here are just a few reasons we love them:
They’re true icons of the Sonoran Desert, and their white blossom is the Arizona state flower.
Saguaros grow slowly. It can take 50 - 80 years for them to reach 10 feet tall and grow arms, but they can live for more than 150 years!
They support desert wildlife by providing nesting spots for birds and producing fruit that feeds animals.
Their bold, sculptural shape makes any yard feel like an authentic piece of the desert.

🏠 Can Saguaro Cacti Live Indoors?
Realistically, saguaros are not indoor plants. They thrive outdoors in full sun, in well-draining soil, and with plenty of airflow, just like in their native desert.
If you’re planting in Arizona, the ground is the best place for them. After planting, allow the saguaro to settle for about a month before watering. Once established, water deeply but infrequently, and always let the soil dry out between waterings. Avoid constant drip irrigation. Saguaros like things dry.
Here's how to care for a small saguaro indoors:
1. Light
• Place it in a south- or west-facing window where it can get at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
• If sunlight is limited, supplement with a full-spectrum grow light designed for cacti.
2. Soil
• Use a well-draining cactus/succulent mix. You can add sand or perlite to improve drainage.
• Avoid regular potting soil — it retains too much moisture.
3. Pot & Drainage
• Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
• Terracotta pots are ideal because they allow moisture to evaporate.
4. Watering
• Water sparingly: only when the soil is completely dry.
• During winter (dormant season), water even less frequently — maybe once a month or less.
• Overwatering is the #1 cause of indoor saguaro death.
5. Temperature & Humidity
• Keep it in a warm, dry spot — ideally 65–85°F.
• Avoid humid bathrooms or kitchens; saguaros prefer low humidity.
6. Fertilizer
• Feed with a cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season (spring–summer).
• Skip fertilizer in fall and winter.
7. Growth Considerations
• Saguaros grow extremely slowly indoors — only a few inches over several years.
• They may lean toward the light, so rotate the pot occasionally.

📜 A Note on Native Plant Law
Saguaros are a protected species in Arizona. It’s important to buy only from reputable nurseries that legally source and sell them like we do here at Ocotillo Joe. If you’re planning to relocate or remove a native saguaro, permits may be required, so always check local regulations before doing so.
When you buy from us, you can rest easy knowing your cactus was grown and sourced the right way.
