What Are The Best Plants For Your Arizona Yard?

Let's be real, not every plant can handle Arizona. We're talking 115° summers, months without rain, and soil that's basically rocks. But here's the good news: the plants that can handle it? They're absolutely stunning.
Whether you just moved here or you're finally ready to ditch the sad patches of dying grass, this is your go-to list of the most popular plants we see in Arizona yards, and the ones we recommend every single day at the nursery.
The Cacti & Succulents That Make It Pop
Saguaro

Obviously. The king of the desert. Nothing says "this is Arizona" like a saguaro in your front yard. They're slow growers (like, seriously slow, we're talking decades), but they're absolutely worth it. A saguaro is a living piece of Arizona history that will outlive all of us.
Just remember: saguaros are protected under Arizona's Native Plant Protection Act. Always buy from a licensed nursery (like us!) to make sure your plant is legally and sustainably sourced.
Prickly Pear

Prickly pears are everywhere for a reason. They're fast-growing, drought-proof, and come in some incredible varieties. The Santa Rita prickly pear is a fan favorite; its pads turn a deep purple in cooler weather, which looks absolutely wild against the desert landscape.
They're also edible! The fruit (tuñas) and pads (nopales) are a staple in Southwestern cooking.
Agave

Agaves are the sculptural statement piece every Arizona yard needs. That bold rosette shape with the sharp, architectural leaves? Chef's kiss. They come in tons of varieties... from the massive Blue Weber agave to the compact Artichoke agave, so there's one for every size yard.
Pro tip: they're sometimes called "century plants" because they take years to bloom. When they finally do send up that massive flower stalk, it's absolutely spectacular (and then the main plant dies, but don't worry, they leave behind plenty of pups).
Golden Barrel Cactus

These round, golden-spined beauties are the accent piece of Arizona landscaping. Group a few together in a rock bed and you've instantly got that polished, high end desert look. They're low-maintenance, sun-loving, and they handle the heat like champs.
Ocotillo

You didn't think we'd skip the plant we're named after, did you? Ocotillos are one of the most unique and eye-catching plants in the entire Sonoran Desert. Those tall, spiny canes shoot up 15–20 feet and look completely dead most of the year... until it rains. Then they leaf out in bright green almost overnight, and in the spring they're topped with fiery red-orange flower clusters that hummingbirds can't resist. They make an incredible natural fence, a dramatic focal point, or a statement piece along a driveway. There's a reason we named the whole business after this plant. It's that cool.
The Trees Everyone Wants
Palo Verde

If Arizona had an official yard tree, this would be it. Palo verdes have that signature green bark that photosynthesizes even when the leaves drop, and in the spring? They absolutely explode with yellow blooms. They're drought-tolerant once established, provide great shade, and they just look like Arizona.
The thornless hybrids are especially popular for residential yards; all the beauty, none of the poking.
Desert Willow

This one's a showstopper. Desert willows produce these gorgeous orchid-like flowers in shades of pink, purple, and white all summer long. Hummingbirds go absolutely crazy for them. They're deciduous, so they'll drop their leaves in winter, but that just reveals a cool, twisting branch structure underneath.
Plant one on the south or west side of your house for some extra shade where you need it most.
