If you’ve ever driven through the desert and spotted those vibrant, paddle-shaped plants crowned with blooms or colorful fruit, you’ve met the Prickly Pear cactus. At Ocotillo Joe, we’re proud to offer several varieties, including the Beavertail Prickly Pear, Purple Prickly Pear, and more. Each has its own unique beauty and personality. Whether you’re looking to create a striking focal point in your yard or add a low-maintenance edible plant to your garden, the Prickly Pear delivers. Are Prickly Pears Safe To Eat?

Yes! The pads (also called nopales) and the fruit (called tunas) of many Prickly Pear varieties are edible once properly prepared. Nopales can be sliced and sautéed, grilled, or added to salads, and the sweet fruit is often used for jams, syrups, or even cocktails. Just remember to remove all spines and glochids (those tiny, hair-like prickles) before enjoying.
How to Care for Your Prickly Pear Year-Round

Prickly Pears are desert natives, so they don’t require much water — but they still appreciate the right care:
Spring–Fall: Water deeply about once every 2–4 weeks, depending on your climate and soil. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
Winter: Reduce watering significantly. In cooler months, most established Prickly Pears can go without water for weeks at a time.
Soil: Good drainage is key. Prickly Pear roots will rot if they sit in soggy soil. For the best results, plant your cactus in Joe Dirt Kick Ass Cactus Mix, specially formulated to provide the perfect blend of nutrients and drainage for healthy growth.
Why We Love Them

Aside from being drought-tolerant, beautiful, and edible, Prickly Pears are a haven for pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. Their flowers light up the desert landscape in shades of yellow, pink, and orange, while their pads and fruit add color and texture year-round.
