Few plants are as instantly recognizable or otherworldly as the Joshua Tree. Native to the Mojave Desert and famous for their sculptural, branching forms, Joshua Trees have captivated everyone from rockstars and photographers to travelers and Instagram influencers.
Planting a Joshua Tree in your Arizona yard is an excellent idea! Read more below to learn how to plant them and where to get them.

There’s no better way to capture the spirit of the desert than by planting a Joshua Tree in your Arizona yard. Its iconic form and rugged elegance create a truly unique and stunning landscape statement.
So, What Exactly Is a Joshua Tree?
Despite their name, Joshua Trees aren’t trees at all. They’re actually a type of yucca, Yucca brevifolia, to be exact, and they’re part of the same tough, drought-loving family as many of the desert plants we specialize in here at Ocotillo Joe.
Known for their twisting, Dr. Seuss-like branches and greenish-blue spiky foliage, Joshua Trees bloom in late winter and early spring with creamy, white flower clusters. Their shape is almost sculptural, making them a perfect statement plant for any Southwestern or xeriscape design.
Can You Plant Your Own Joshua Tree?
Absolutely. While Joshua Trees are protected in their native habitats like Joshua Tree National Park, you can legally plant one, as long as it’s been nursery-grown. At Ocotillo Joe, we carry select, small, medium & large Joshua Trees that are ready to take root in your yard.
Because they grow slowly (and look more impressive as they age), we always recommend choosing larger specimens if you're looking for instant impact. Think of them as living, low-maintenance sculptures.
Want to keep it small? Younger Joshua Trees also thrive in containers and pair beautifully with agaves, aloes, and cacti in raised beds or large pottery. They bring that wild Mojave energy into any landscape or patio design.
Where Do Joshua Trees Fit in a Landscape?
Joshua Trees are true showstoppers, and incredibly versatile.
Place a single mature Joshua Tree as a centerpiece in a gravel or rock garden.
Add them to a succulent-focused courtyard alongside golden barrels, desert spoon, or red yucca.
Use strategic landscape lighting to highlight their twisted limbs and make them glow after dark.
Their vertical form adds contrast and drama when paired with low-growing cactus clusters or symmetrical agaves. Whether you lean toward a modern minimalist look or a rugged natural vibe, Joshua Trees give your design structure, texture, and unmistakable desert style.

How to Care for a Joshua Tree
Good news: these plants are low-maintenance, tough, and totally adapted to our climate.
Here’s how to help them thrive:
Soil: Fast-draining soil is a must. We highly recommend using our Joe Dirt Kick ASS Cactus Mix when planting.
Water: Treat them like a cactus. Deep water very occasionally. Every few weeks at most during hot months. Let the soil fully dry out in between.
Fertilizer: An occasional dose of cactus-friendly fertilizer during the growing season can support blooms and new growth, but don’t overdo it.
Trimming: No need! Dried leaves become part of their trunk and help protect the plant naturally.
The biggest mistake people make? Overwatering. These are Mojave natives. They’re built for heat, drought, and long stretches without a drop of rain.
